Howard Badhand
Howard Badhand is a rare combination of Lakota Souix, Shaman, and Taoist master.  His warmth, wit and great spiritual strength is firmly grounded in the earth.  His simplicity and candor smoothes off the rough edges of life.

Below is a short segment of an extensive dialogue we conducted with Howard, which appears in its entirety in our book "Dialogues With Emerging Spiritual Teachers."

Q. The concept of enlightenment seems to have taken on many definitions in these times.  What does the term "enlightenment" mean to you?

A.  The term "enlightenment" is just for the first time to see everything clearly, in a proper relation and in your relation to it.  We say that you shouldn't "seek it," because it's a very brief moment in your life, maybe a second, maybe three minutes, whatever.  But if you're in constant search of it, again you begin to seek outside of yourself because you're looking for that one moment of insight, that one "Aha" moment.

For those on the path who have had "enlightenment," it's just one of those things that happens.  It's like waking up.  Once you wake up, you have a lot of work to do.  Any given day you go to sleep, and regenerate and regain your energies.  You wake up the next morning and all that you've done is opened your eyes to the light again so you can participate in relationship.  And you still have a lot of work to do.  So "enlightenment" is one of those very brief moments that will happen if you really do experience clarity and you experience your relationship to the world.  But it's a very brief momentary process.  And it's not worth the search if you understand it. (Laughter)
